Eric Narioo became enamored with qvevri-winemaking during a visit to Georgia in 2012. The qvevris at Vino di Anna are handmade and come from one of the last few remaining artisanal qvevri makers, Zaaliko Bodjadze.
This wine comes from the Don Alfio parcel, in Contrada (Piano) Filici, above the village of Rovitello, near a sciara (lava flow) dating back to 1923. The century-old vines are surrounded by olive, cherry, and hazelnut trees with a large biodiversity of wildflowers and vegetation.
Harvest took place in the middle of October. The grapes are de-stemmed by hand, into a 1000-liter qvevri. Maceration on the skins, lasting one month. The wine was then pressed and returned to a qvevri for aging on fine lees.
This wine has attractive aromas of dark cherries and dried fruit, ripe tomatoes, and floral notes. The palate is spicy, with hints of licorice, chocolate, and savory undertones. It has a firm acid backbone, balanced by depth and well-structured tannins. In its youth, these tannins are mouth-filling and austere, with time, they will soften and integrate.
