In local dialect, Vinupetra means: “the wine produced in a land full of stones”. This wine comes from a single vineyard VignaCalderara in Contrada Porcaria in the municipality of Castiglione di Sicilia in the northern east side of Etna. The vineyard mostly has old vines over 120 years old (and some that were planted in 2005). After harvest in late October, the grapes are crushed, the grapes are macerated less than 15 days, and only 30% of the stems are used. The wine ages for 12 months in 225L and 500L casks and barrels. The wine is racked 6 times (according to the phases of the moon) and receives small sulfur additions before fermentation and before bottling. The wine offers power and elegance, with aromas of dark fruits, stewed plums, complex undertones of cacao, herbs, and flowers, and smokiness. Beautifully fruit-forward in its youth, gaining more earthy notes as it ages.
