Originating from the sun-drenched, south-facing 1.5-hectare Les Enfers vineyard in Noizay, the name “Enfers” translates to “hell,” possibly referencing the challenging nature of this terroir. The 50-year-old vines grow on perruches soil—flinty clay-limestone that is notoriously difficult to work. The wine is fermented in stainless steel before gentle gravity racking into 4-12-year-old barrels, spending one year in barrel followed by an additional 12 months in stainless steel, showcasing a pure expression of terroir. Les Enfers Tranquilles is recognized for its tension, crystalline quality, length, and balance.
The 2020 vintage, influenced by water scarcity, produced small, concentrated grapes that resulted in a wine with depth and lush ripeness. As Michel notes, there is a focus on pleasant phenolic bitterness that compensates for a more rounded, lower acidity, adding a unique textural note. However, it required extended aging to fully develop its complex character. The result is a wine that balances rich texture and depth with the signature tension that defines Les Enfers Tranquilles. This wine has a long life ahead and could find another groove with additional years of aging.
