Eric Narioo became enamored with qvevri-winemaking during a visit to Georgia in 2012. The qvevris at Vino di Anna are handmade and come from one of the last few remaining artisanal qvevri makers, Zaaliko Bodjadze, based in Imereti. He works with pure clay sourced from high up in the Caucasus Mountains and is a true expert in his craft.
In 2015, Anna and Eric purchased a small, stunning property in Contrade Rampante, just beneath the Quota Mille road on the north slope. Half the property was 80-100-year-old albarello vines of Nerello Mascalese, and the rest, century-old olive trees. After converting the vineyard to biodynamics over 4 years, the grapes in 2019 were particularly distinct, so they decided to make, for the first time, a single-vineyard wine from Rampante.
Harvest took place during the third week of October. The grapes were destemmed by hand into a 1500 hl qvevri, the grapes were left to macerate for six weeks. After pressing, the wine spent 9 months in an old oak cask on fine lees, prior to bottling.
The wine is vibrant, with lively black fruit, deep tones of leather, and earthy mineral notes, with spicy, vegetal undertones. The wine has a backbone of energetic acidity and fine-grained tannins that lend a unique texture and great age-ability.
